时间:4月16-5月15日
地点:飞越皇后大厦画廊
Crossing Art is pleased to present Wei Kang: Urban Landscapes, the second solo exhibition of Shanghai based artist Wei Kang at Crossing Art Gallery. The exhibition includes over 100 new paintings of urban landscapes inspired by Wei Kang’s extensive travels to international cities over the past two years.
Growing up in Shanghai, Wei Kang spent years commuting between the world's tallest, shiniest skyscrapers to the narrow, dark alleyways of his neighborhood watching a dramatic urban change in his native Shanghai. As a result he has come to deeply understand the secrets of Shanghai by witnessing the changes it has undergone. Inspired by his deep and intimate connections with the city, life and energy of Shanghai, Wei Kang set off to check the pulse of other major cities in China and around the world, with paint, brush and canvas in hand.
Wei Kang expresses his passion for the urban environment by collaging together different characteristics from the cities he visits and rendering the city he envisions on small canvases. To Wei Kang, the city is a duality between the horizontal and vertical movement of lines. He believes that color is the most important element in a painting taking precedence over structure and composition. Through his use of a brighter palate, Wei Kang projects his passion and raw mixed emotions for the cities he paints.
Wei Kang will continue to explore his urban painting explorations here in New York. While exploring the city, Wei Kang will capture New York’s unique characteristics by creating sketches and drawings outdoors in front of defining New York City landmarks including the Statue of Liberty, the U.N. Headquarters, the Empire State Building, Wall Street, City Hall, Rockefeller Center and the Manhattan Bridge. Back in the studio he will paint one scene a day until the opening of Wei Kang: Urban Landscapes, Saturday April 16, 2011.
