Museum-Wide Lunar New Year Festival

Bring the whole family for a day of fun celebrating Chinese culture—calligraphy, tea ceremony, costume demonstrations, a youth orchestra performance on traditional Chinese instruments, a lion dance procession, and more.

Sesame Street Puppet Show
11:00–11:45 a.m., Carson Family Hall, Uris Center for Education, ground floor
Performers using Sesame Street puppets, costumes, and songs introduce a character who must be educated about the Lunar New Year and Chinese traditions. Chinese songs are integrated into the familiar mix of sing-alongs for toddlers.

Storytime in Nolen Library
11:45 a.m.–12:15 p.m., Children's Reading Room in Nolen Library, Uris Center for Education
Come and hear art tales in the library's special corner for kids! Then go and find the art on a treasure hunt in the galleries. For families with children ages 3–7.

Lion Dance Procession
12:15–1:00 p.m., Uris Center for Education, ground floor
Traditional, celebratory lion dancing by students from the Chinese Center on Long Island.

Fan and Ribbon Dance Performance
1:00–1:30 p.m. and 2:00–2:30 p.m., Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Florence and Herbert Irving Asian Wing, 2nd floor
Enjoy a performance of fan and ribbon dancing by performers from the New York Chinese Cultural Center.

Calligraphy and Face Painting
1:00–2:00 p.m., Great Hall North Balcony, 2nd floor
Experts invite audience participation as they demonstrate calligraphy and face painting techniques. Come and go as you like.

Costume Demonstration
1:00–2:00 p.m., Astor forecourt, Florence and Herbert Irving Asian Wing, 2nd floor
Step into the Ming and Qing dynasties by dressing up in traditional Chinese costumes based on Peking Opera wardrobes of those eras.

Drop-in Drawing
1:00–2:00 p.m., The Astor Court, Florence and Herbert Irving Asian Wing, 2nd floor
Draw inspiration from original works of art! Join talented art instructors in the galleries for informal sketching fun. Visitors of all ages may come and go as they like. Materials are provided.

Youth Orchestra Performance
1:30–2:15 p.m., The Buddha Hall, Charlotte C. Weber Galleries for the Arts of Ancient China, 2nd floor
Music students perform classical pieces on traditional Chinese instruments.

Tea Ceremony
2:15–3:00 p.m., The Astor Court, Florence and Herbert Irving Asian Wing, 2nd floor
Learn about the history of tea in Chinese culture and taste some traditional examples.

Peking Opera: Little Red Riding Hood
3:00–4:00 p.m. (children's performance) and 7:00 p.m. (evening concert), The Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium, 1st floor
Tickets: $15 for children's performance (purchase tickets), $30 for evening concert (purchase tickets)
At 3:00 p.m., enjoy a special, one-hour children's performance of the classic tale, performed in English to a prerecorded score. A full-length evening concert, spoken in English and sung in Mandarin, features acrobatics, martial arts, live music, and dance.
